Promoting Sustainable Agriculture - BenQ Materials' Agrifood Initiative
Taiwan is rich in culinary diversity and offers easy access to a wide array of foods. This contrasts against a backdrop where many people worldwide still suffer from hunger and malnutrition, which is an issue that the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2): Zero Hunger addresses by prioritizing nutrition, food security, and sustainable agriculture.
As a sustainability-driven company, part of BenQ Materials' support for SDG 2 is through the Taiwan Agrifood Action Support program. This initiative assists small agricultural producers grappling with the impact of climate change and crowding out by imported produce. Noting their loss of income and the gradual disappearance of local agriculture, BenQ Materials began purchasing fruits and vegetables from the Maliguang tribe nearly 10 years ago and steadily expanded to other small farmers in the Yunlin region.
Beyond securing steady income for the farmers, the Agrifood program also maximizes the value of food by focusing on sustainable farming practices. For its contribution to local farming communities, the program was recognized with a Silver Award at the 2023 Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards.
Healthy Food, Healthy Life
BenQ Materials supports small-scale organic farmers by purchasing their produce for its staff cafeteria. To help employees learn about the food they consume, signboards are displayed to explain the origin of the vegetables, the background of the producers, and the land cultivation methods used. Employees can also purchase raw vegetables to take home, further extending their support to the farmers.
Zero-waste Purchasing
Aside from regular support, BenQ Materials also purchases and sells slow-moving or irregular products, which are often the result of the effects of natural disasters. Such purchases help to reduce food waste and provide immediate assistance to small farmers. Moreover, purchasing local organic fruits and vegetables also helps in lowering the carbon footprint. Stable incomes meanwhile support farmers to purchase new equipment and improve farming efficiency, which encourages other farmers to commit to green farming and agricultural transformation.

When BenQ Materials organizes large-scale events or purchases of corporate gifts, it prioritizes local farmers' products and supports local agriculture. Earlier in 2023, the company hosted an agri-food seminar to unite various stakeholders and share the latest trends and innovations in Taiwan's agriculture, thereby raising the understanding of, and support for, sustainable agriculture.
Demonstrating a lasting commitment to the environment and eco-friendly agricultural products, BenQ Materials believes in reduced pesticide and chemical fertilizer usage. By safeguarding biodiversity, land and water resources, and fostering a positive sustainable cycle, the company will continue working with local partners to promote the development of sustainable agriculture in Taiwan.

In 2023, the awards received more than 300 entries.
