BenQ Materials' Trip to Keeping Below 1.5°C
Many countries are experiencing record-breaking temperatures in the summer of 2023. Heatwaves and wildfires are a sign that global warming is still intensifying. Carbon emissions, which had been declining due to a reduction in global transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic, have increased again, even more than before. If current government policies do not change, global warming will reach 2.5-2.8°C by the end of the 21st century, causing irreversible damage to the environment and ecosystems.
In response to the accelerating pace of global warming, governments are increasing their efforts to reduce carbon emissions and raise their mid-term carbon reduction targets for 2030. BenQ Materials has set goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to 2020 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The company has announced these goals on its website and public platforms, demonstrating its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
For its active commitment to carbon reduction, BenQ Materials has been recognized with an "Outstanding Results" grade in the Temperature Rising Index for Pathways (TRIPs), a joint initiative of CommonWealth Magazine and Tunghai University that aims to limit global warming to less than 1.6°C. BenQ Materials is one of only 94 companies out of nearly 800 that have participated in the evaluation to be recognized for its efforts to mitigate climate risk and achieve net-zero emissions.
TRIPs was initially created to raise the public profile of Taiwanese companies that have set net-zero emissions or carbon-neutral targets and to encourage those that have not yet set targets to accelerate their progress. Using the global warming scenarios released in the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the AGTP (Absolute Global Temperature Potential) model is applied to corporate temperature scores in simulating companies' warming paths by 2050, and even to the end of the century. TRIPs reflects whether a company's climate ambition is in line with the goal of limiting global warming to less than 1.5°C. BenQ Materials is one of the companies that has achieved this.
