In March 2021, we introduced an intellectual property management system to manage and utilize intellectual property resources while avoiding intellectual property infringements. We incorporate IPR management as an important objective of corporate governance and link it to operational objectives.

BenQ Materials develops six core materials science technologies, namely optics, polymers, coatings, injections & extrusion, lathing, and roll-to-roll manufacturing. With these technologies as the foundation, we have developed four major product categories: functional films, advanced battery materials, healthcare products, and performance textiles. We are committed to independent R&D and strive for innovative applications that meet the needs of a wide range of markets. Innovation is a key pillar at BenQ Materials and it is paramount that we manage and protect our proprietary technologies.

To consolidate R&D achievements, enhance the company's competitiveness, and strengthen intellectual property protection, the primary goal of our IPR strategy focuses on combining core technologies with products development to yield critical patents. With trade secrets management becoming increasingly indispensable, we also implement strict protection measures for high-potential technologies to ensure flexible use that maximizes their value in the future.

As such, the company promotes four major policies for IPR management: (1) implement corporate governance regulations and intellectual property management; (2) deepen core technologies and improve our intellectual property framework; (3) enhance employees’ intellectual property awareness and create intellectual property values; and (4) protect the use of R&D achievements and strengthen trade secrets protection.

As of December 2021, BenQ Materials had more than 750 patents and 354 trademarks worldwide, covering major markets in Taiwan, the U.S., EU, China, and Southeast Asia. Currently, there are more than 300 patents and 40 trademarks under application. The large amount of patents and trademarks data is systematically managed through a specialized database to effectively monitor the progress of every IPR application and license issuance, as well as their subsequent maintenance and utilization.

Since the introduction of TIPS in March 2021, we have progressively refined the company’s IPR and trade secrets management mechanisms and established clear goals for IPR management. Internally, we have hosted working groups and conducted training courses to enable seamless cross-departmental cooperation. For example, in addition to the efforts of our IPR team, cross-departmental teams including Legal Affairs, Human Resources, Procurement, Information Services, and the Quality System Division have assisted in the completion of the TIPS Certification application. We have also arranged for training to improve employees’ IPR knowledge and reinforce internal awareness and legal compliance.

With official accreditation of our robust IPR management system, the TIPS Certification is another stepping stone as we further optimize our IPR and trade secrets management over the coming years. We believe that further enhancements of a comprehensive IPR management system underscores a unique competitive advantage and further promotes sustainable corporate development.
